About Me

Mikael Karlsson
That's me

I live in the north of Sweden in a small town called Skelleftea. It's not so far from the Arctic Circle. I'm very interested in hunting and outdoor life. My knifemaking career started, exactly the way it has started for many other knifemakers, with a knife for my self. This was in the middle of 1980. I really like to create something with my hands and it is the perfect thing to do, during the long and dark arctic winters. I am not a full time knifemaker and I am not sure if I want to become one. I make knives because it gives me much pleasure and if I lose the joy of making knives the result wouldn't be any good.

I don't make blades. Maybe you wonder why? Well, to make a good blade you must have the knowledge to do it right. Here in Sweden we have bladesmiths who are really good. Many of them lives in this area. They are the experts on making high quality blades, so why should I mess with their business... My skill is to make fine knives.

The knives I do are similar to our native's knives, the Sami people. They live here in the north of Scandinavia and like the rest of the world's natives, they are a practical people. The items they make are practical and for every day use. This is what I want with my knives - nice to hold and to look at but made for every day use.
